—Vander in Chapter 1 of Fire Emblem Engage.
Vander is a playable character from Fire Emblem Engage.
Profile[]
Vander is a 32nd generation Steward of the Dragon, protectors of the Divine Dragon at the Land of Lythos. Honored by his duty, Vander is Alear's primary caretaker, however due to his advancing age, he personally selected Clanne and Framme as his successors.
After years of watching over Alear, Vander is shocked when they finally awake from their thousand year slumber. He immediately sent word to the Dragon Monarch and Alear's mother Lumera of their awakening. Thrilled by her child's awakening, Lumera summons Alear to the castle with Vander, Clanne, and Framme escorting them. En route to Lythos Castle, the group is ambushed by corpse soldiers which Vander identifies as the Corrupted. Though Clanne and Framme are briefly separated, forcing Vander and Alear to rescue them, a timely appearance by Lumera in her dragon form destroys the Corrupted, allowing the party to safely arrive at Lythos Castle.
Disappointed that Alear's slumber seemed to cause them to forget much of their past, Lumera requests to spar with them in hopes of jogging their memory. She tasks Alear's stewards to fight alongside them during the skirmish. Ultimately, Alear emerges victorious but their sparring does very little to restore their memory. That night, the country of Elusia launches a surprise raid on Lythos Castle in hopes of stealing their Emblem Rings. Their raid is successful and the attack ends when a mysterious cloaked figure appears and launches a massive energy attack on Alear, forcing Lumera to intercept it and sustain fatal wounds. Devastated by her death, just before she perishes, Lumera tasked Vander with continuing to serve Alear as they travel Elyos to gather the twelve Emblem Rings, a task he solemnly accepts.
Throughout the Divine Dragon's journey across Elyos, Vander provides them with protection and counsel. Following Sombron's defeat, Vander cedes his role as Steward to Clanne and Framme and becomes a knight of the Somniel.
Personality[]
Vander takes great pride in his role as the Steward of the Dragon and as such approaches his care with Queen Lumera and Alear with the highest of decorum. His highest priority is the protection of Alear and often does mundane chores for them so they can focus more on their leadership duties. After Alear expresses a desire to be a little more independent and not requiring Vander to do all of their less important tasks, he respects their request, but nonetheless proves to be a stalwart ally and still earnestly acts as an advisor throughout their journey.
A veteran in his duties, Vander trains Clanne and Framme with sternness over their childish enthusiasm in the presence of the Divine Dragon. Despite his occasional gruffness and harshness, he expresses utmost faith in his two successors and genuinely wishes to train them to uphold the standards he too was taught. Vander experiences allows him to offer sagely advice to other members of Alear's forces, providing wise counsel to the likes of Alfred and Amber.
Despite his age, Vander is diligently physically active as his daily training regimens tuckers out Amber, but laments that he is past his physical prime. His steward duties made him adept at cooking, cleaning, and sewing, with Vander often found knitting during his free time.

Vander is similar to those of the Jagen Archetype, being a strong starting Pre-Promote with slightly higher starting stats making him a valuable damage soaker for some of the initial maps. With that said, he suffers from the archetype's greatest flaw of having some of the lowest growths in the game, with his starting growths for Speed and Defense having Growth Rates of 35 and are his highest aside from a Growth Rate of 60 for HP. As such, Vander quickly falls off, and with only 19 levels to work with before he hits the natural cap and requiring a Second Seal to continue forward, he also becomes something of a EXP sponge, giving him far less returns on kills for the maps where he is one of the stronger units base wise and has greater difficulty keeping up with other units who, when invested into, give more consistent returns in the later game.
Vander starts off as a Paladin, giving him the Cavalry Battle Style, which equates to more movement. His Personal Skill, Alabaster Duty, grants +5 Crit to both himself and Alear if he is adjacent to them. He is a powerful support in the early game when paired with Alear, but due to the effect only supporting if Alear is deployed, it can be an empty skill if they are not in the battle. Vander overall is best suited to remain in his default class as he is competent enough when he is in the chapters where he is one of the only options. If looking to use Vander long-term, Great Knight, obtained through a Second Seal, also can be worth moving him into to capitalize on his two strongest non-HP stats.
Ring wise, Vander is mainly best as a defensive unit, thus the Ring of the Radiant Hero provides the powerful Great Aether engage skill to reduce damage, damages enemies in a field with the most powerful Greataxe available, and can restore health. The Ring of the Sage Lord lets him equip the weapon with the best match-ups to foes that attack him and can give him a wide assortment of weapon proficiencies. The Ring of the Holy Knight augments his already high mobility and adds a few additional tricks.
Overall, Vander is an enormous time sink to bring up on par with a host of other characters recruited over time who do his role the same, but much more easily or gives higher returns on investments. He is still valuable for a portion of the early game, especially for higher difficulties as a sturdy wall to draw enemies into favorable positions for his allies to dispatch.
