The Wakizashi is a Katana that is introduced in Fire Emblem Fates. The more advanced version of the Kodachi, the Wakizashi retains its predecessor's ability to perform ranged attacks, and as a sure sign of upgrade it finally allows its user the ability to trigger offensive skills and critical hits. Its might is also doubled from what it used to be. However, unlike the lesser Kodachi the user can only attack from a distance (making it similar to most bows/yumi), also retaining the drawback of preventing the user from perfoming follow up attacks and increasing the enemy's ability to follow up. Lastly, it's less accurate than the previous model and it even inflicts an evasion penalty that the lesser variant completely lacked. Like most other Katana, the Wakizashi reduces its wielder's Defense and Resistance by 1, but raises their Speed by 1.

Etymology[]
Wakizashi are Japanese swords used by the Samurai class in Feudal Japan. Wakizashi varied in length, but were generally shorter than the Katana. Having both a Wakizashi and Katana were generally regarded as official sign that the wielder was a samurai or a swordsman. In this instance, the Wakizashi served as the companion sword to the Katana.
