The War of the Stones is the conflict on the continent of Magvel beginning in the year 803. The Grado Empire, under the leadership of Emperor Vigarde and Prince Lyon (posessed or manipulated by the Demon King depending on the route chosen) invaded the other nations of Magvel with the intent of destroying the Sacred Stones and allowing the Demon King to be resurrected and usher in a new era of darkness. The conclusion of the war saw the restoration of the Kingdom of Renais and the defeat of the Grado Empire and the Demon King.
Origin[]
The catalyst for the War of the Stones was, for considerable time even during the conflict, unknown. It was eventually found that the war began when Prince Lyon, in experimenting with the Fire Emblem, the Sacred Stone of Grado, had inadvertently created the Dark Stone, which corrupted the Prince and allowed his body to be possessed by the Demon King Fomortiis. Using the guise of Prince Lyon, the Demon King resurrected Emperor Vigarde, who had recently passed away prior, and set about planning the invasion of the other Sacred Stone nations. The Demon King desired to destroy the Sacred Stones before his return, preventing any opportunity for the people of Magvel to ever again imprison and defeat him.
Progression[]
The First Battle of Renais Castle[]
The war began with the Grado Empire's invasion of the Kingdom of Renais. The two Sacred Stone nations had long been allied, with Prince Ephraim and Princess Eirika both having been educated in the Grado Empire alongside Prince Lyon for a time, and so the attack on Renais' sovereignty was entirely unexpected. While Prince Ephraim charged into Grado proper, hoping to buy time for King Fado to organize Renais' defense, the Grado Empire had already succeeded in seizing the majority of the country, and were attacking Renais Castle itself.
The Imperial army quickly forced King Fado to order the surrender of Renais' arms, but he ordered General Seth and Sir Franz to take Princess Eirika to Frelia, where she would be protected by King Hayden of Frelia, another ally of Renais. Although Valter, an ex-general of the Grado Empire at the time, was able to intercept General Seth and Princess Eirika, he allowed them to escape after wounding the General, in hopes that the war would be prolonged. Grado commander O'Neil continued the pursuit of the General and Princess, but was killed just outside of Frelia's borders.
Meanwhile, King Fado met his end at the hands of the possessed Prince Lyon, thus completing the conquest of the Kingdom of Renais. Grado's Imperial Three, Generals Duessel "Obisidian", Selena "Fluorspar", and Glen "Sunstone" were deemed insufficient for the purposes of conquering the other nations, and so were joined by another three generals, these being Caellach "Tiger-Eye", Valter "Moonstone" (who had previously been a member of the Imperial Three before being dismissed for cruelty), and Riev "Blood Beryl".
The Battle at Border Mulan[]
While Renais had fallen, the Kingdom of Frelia had been able to properly mount a defense. Frelia's army, under the direction of Prince Innes of Frelia, had made preparations to halt the Grado Empire at the river just inside Frelia's borders, to the north of Fort Rigwald. Meanwhile, Princess Tana of Frelia had made her way to the Frelian border castle at Mulan to await the arrival of General Seth and Princess Eirika. However, an attack by Grado forces under the command of Breguet were able to defeat the Frelian garrison, and Princess Tana was captured.
Princess Tana's captivity would not last long however, as General Seth and Princess Eirika, along with Sir Franz and Sir Gilliam of Frelia arrived in time to defeat the small force led by Breguet. Breguet himself was killed in action. Although a more minor battle, the allied victory at Border Mulan ensured that a crucial defense of Frelia would remain intact, and both Princess Eirika and Princess Tana safe, at least for the time being. Both soon made their way to Castle Frelia, to plan their next steps. Princess Eirika made the decision to move south and retrieve her brother, Prince Ephraim, and although King Hayden could not spare many troops, he gave Princess Eirika a considerable sum, a supply convoy, and vassals of his court to aid in her mission.
The Battle of Serafew[]
Princess Eirika met her first real opposition from the Grado Empire at the border town of Serafew, on the borders of the Grado Empire and the Kingdom of Renais. After running into the Grado cleric Natasha, Princess Eirika and her retinue were forced to battle with the Grado garrison under the command of Sir Saar, who had been tasked by General Glen "Sunstone" with hunting down Natasha and defeating Princess Eirika. Sir Saar was killed in the conflict, and Princess Eirika continued on her way south to Renvall.
After the battle, Natasha revealed the Grado Empire's plans to destroy the Sacred Stones, although the purpose of this design still remained a mystery.
First Battle of Renvall[]
Whilst Princess Eirika was on her way south, and was fighting at Serafew, Prince Ephraim ordered the risky attack on Renvall, a key defense of the Grado Empire, with his retainers. While Prince Epharim was able to score a decisive victory over the Grado Empire in the interior of the castle, defeating the mercenary Zonta, it soon became clear that Renvall was left open to attack for the purpose of trapping Prince Ephraim and his knights, a plan that was concocted by General Valter's adjutant, Lord Tirado, and Sir Orson, one of Prince Ephraim's knights. Once Prince Ephraim and his knights had secured the castle, they found that Renvall was completely surrounded by General Valter and his forces.
However, Prince Ephraim and his loyal knights Sir Kyle and Sir Forde were able to escape the trap, to General Valter's dismay. Lord Tirado, however, spread the rumor that Prince Ephraim had been captured, so as to lure Princess Eirika to his rescue.
Battle of the Adlas Plains[]
Princess Eirika had hoped to sneak past Grado's defenses unnoticed, but after the Battle of Serafew her company was already under surveillance. They were thus intercepted at the Adlas Plains. Novala, one of Grado's mages (perhaps one of the Royal Mages), was tasked by General Riev to stop Princess Eirika. Novala first attempted to gain Princess Eirika's submission by threatening civilians of Renais, but after that attempt failed, he resorted to using force. The resulting battle saw the defeat of Novala at the hands of Princess Eirika's company, and she continued on to Renvall.
Second Battle of Renvall[]
Princess Eirika arrived at Renvall to find the garrison ready to battle under the command of Sir Murray. However, Grado's forces were defeated by Princess Eirika's company and Princess Eirika was able to enter Renvall. Once inside, Princess Eirika and General Seth were approached by Sir Orson, whose treachery was as yet unknown to them. Sir Orson led them deeper into the castle, before General Seth, wary of Sir Orson's behavior, confronted the knight, who then confessed his treason. The bridge that Princess Eirika's company had just crossed was destroyed by Lord Tirado, and so the only way out was forward. Prince Ephraim, on hearing of the trap that Lord Tirado had sprung, made his way in through another entrance, and the two siblings finally reunited in the midst of battle. Lord Tirado was slain, and the siblings were able to return to Castle Frelia.
Battle at the River[]
While Princess Eirika's mission to find and retrieve Prince Ephraim was underway, Prince Innes led Frelia's forces into battle. The place he chose was a natural barrier. The Grado Empire's assault of Frelia from the south was decisively halted, as Prince Innes was able to outsmart, outmaneuver, and outfight the invasion. Prince Innes soon felt comfortable enough to return to Castle Frelia, arriving at the same time as Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim.
Battle of the Tower of Valni[]
King Hayden had been duly warned of the plight to Frelia's Sacred Stone, and so chose to house it in the Tower of Valni, a defensive structure to the east of Castle Frelia itself. While King Hayden held council with Prince Innes, Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim, Generals Caellach and Selena attacked the tower. Frelia's soldiers fought valiantly, but were quickly and decisively defeated, and General Caellach proceeded to destroy Frelia's Sacred Stone, the second of the Sacred Stones to be destroyed (the first was the Grado Empire's). General Caellach was noted for his brutality during the attack. Afterwards, Grado made no attempt to garrison the Tower of Valni, leaving it to be inhabited by monsters.
Frelia's defeat emphasized the need for the remaining Sacred Stone nations to be warned and to become allies. As Carcino was a Frelian ally (or so it was thought), Prince Innes was sent to treat with Queen Ismaire of Jehanna, while Princess Eirika elected to treat with Emperor Mansel of Rausten. Prince Ephraim announced his ambitious plan to attack the Grado Empire itself.
Battle at Port Kiris[]
Princess Eirika's mission to the Theocracy of Rausten was immediately met with misfortune. On arrival to Carcino's Port Kiris, it was discovered that no ships were sailing to Rausten due to the presence of a ship manned by monsters that made it too dangerous to travel by that route. However, Princess Eirika did not have much time to lament her situation, as mercenaries under the employ of Councilman Pablo of Carcino moved to attack Princess Eirika and her company, for the purpose of retrieving the bounty placed on her. Despite the surprise attack, Princess Eirika was able to defeat the mercenaries and Grado troops under command of Binks at Port Kiris. However, it soon became clear the Carcino had effectively changed side and joined the Grado Empire, and Prince Innes was held in siege by Councilman Pablo's forces. Princess Eirika immediately moved south to aid the Frelian Prince.
Battle of Fort Rigwald[]
Prince Ephraim began his campaign to end the war by marching directly south to Fort Rigwald, where he faced a considerable test. Fort Rigwald had never been breached by an enemy while garrisoned. Under the command of Gheb, a formidable warrior from the Grado Empire, it was a daunting fortress. Nevertheless, Prince Ephraim proved his tactical superiority and was able to do what no one ever had before, and take Fort Rigwald from its previous occupant. The Battle of Fort Rigwald opened the way to further incursions on Grado's soil, and Prince Ephraim quickly moved south to continue his advance to Grado Keep.
Battle of the Teraz Plateau[]
Princess Eirika marched her company with haste to Prince Innes' defense, and quickly found him in a disadvantageous position. Surrounded on all sides, with only two mercenaries to aid him, Prince Innes was on the verge of being defeated. Princess Eirika and company, however, were able to break Councilman Pablo's positions, rescue Prince Innes, and force Councilman Pablo to retreat.
On his retreat, Councilman Klimt approached Princess Eirika and Prince Innes, and informed them that while all of Carcino did not feel as Councilman Pablo did, and that Councilman Pable had acted on his own accord, Carcino itself was no longer in any position to render aid to Frelia or Princess Eirika's company, and had become dangerous for them. However, an alternative route appeared when Ewan of Jehanna offered to show Princess Eirika the way to Jehanna through Caer Pelyn, a treacherous mountain range that held no allegiance to Carcino.
Battle at Bethroen[]
Prince Ephraim continued his march to Grado Keep and arrived at the Grado Empire's port city of Bethroen, where he could arrange transport across the gulf separating the western Grado Empire with the eastern Grado Empire. On arrival, however, he found his former mentor from the Grado Empire and one of the Imperial Three, General Duessel "Obsidian" being attacked by Grado forces. Just moments before Prince Ephraim had arrived, General Duessel had been declared a traitor, and marked for execution, due to his opposition to Grado's war aims. Prince Ephraim was able to defeat Grado's forces yet again, and convince General Duessel to join his army.
Prince Ephraim then had to find passage, and was able to find a ship that would allow him to sail to Taizel, and thus continue his mission.
Landing at Taizel[]
While Prince Ephraim's trip across the gulf was not easy, as he encountered the ship infested with monsters and was able to destroy them, his task did not get any easier on arriving in Taizel. General Caellach had brought a force with him to stop Prince Ephraim's advance, a force comprised of both monsters and Grado soldiers. This was the first evidence that monsters and the Grado Empire were working together, and together they posed a formidable threat. Nevertheless, Prince Ephraim was able to defeat the monsters and Grado's soldier at Taizel, and continued his march east to confront Emperor Vigarde.
Battle at Hamill Canyon[]
Princess Eirika also continued east, fighting monsters through the Caer Pelyn range and being confronted by General Glen before being permitted to continue on her journey to Jehanna. General Glen was murdered shortly after his and Princess Eirika's confrontation by General Valter. Princess Eirika found the next challenge at Hamill Canyon, where Aias, under orders from General Caellach, blocked her path. Aias had never been defeated, never even scratched, and was held as a phenomenal tactician. He was soon supplemented by Councilman Pablo's retreating army from Carcino. Princess Eirika was able to defeat Aias and Councilman Pablo, and knights from Rausten appeared to complete the destruction of Grado's forces in the area. Aias and Pablo were both slain in the conflict, and Princess Eirika and her company prepared to march to Jehanna Hall.
Battle at Za'albul Marsh[]
Prince Ephraim had inched closely to Grado Keep, heralding the final defeat of the Grado Empire. General Selena chose to make her stand at Za'albul Marsh, in hopes that she could defeat Prince Ephraim and thus save her country in its hour of need. Although Prince Ephraim pleaded with General Selena to join him, and in doing so spare her country further suffering as well as the loss of one of its best generals, General Selena refused, and Prince Ephraim was forced to battle. The final result was another victory for Prince Ephraim, but at great cost, the loss of General Selena "Fluorspar", the last of the Imperial Three to remain loyal to the Grado Empire.
Battle for Grado Keep[]
With the defeat of General Selena, the road ahead to Grado Keep was clear. Prince Ephraim marched his company quickly, and assaulted the capital of the Grado Empire, commanded by none other than Emperor Vigarde himself. Grado's soldiery offered stiff resistance, and the Emperor himself was a powerful general in his own right, but Prince Ephraim was able to gain the upper hand and defeat the "Stalwart Silent Emperor". However, Prince Ephraim had noticed during the battle that Emperor Vigarde had acted strangely. Prince Ephraim was able to rescue one of Grado's royal mages, Knoll, who told Prince Ephraim the story of the creation of the Dark Stone, Emperor Vigarde's resurrection, and Prince Lyon's subsequent actions. However, Prince Ephraim had little time to think about such information, as he learned Princess Eirika had been placed under siege at Jehanna Hall, and raced to join Princess Eirika.
Battle for Jehanna Hall[]
While Rausten's knights had been effective at Hamill Canyon, the deserts of Jehanna proved to be a major obstacle in their effectiveness against the Grado Empire in Jehanna. It was during this struggle that word reached Princess Eirika that Queen Ismaire of Jehanna had been abducted, and Princess Eirika immediately attacked Jehanna Hall in hopes of rescuing her. Unfortunately, due to the treason of Carlyle, the leader of Jehanna's army, Queen Ismaire fell into the hands of General Caellach himself, and was forced to surrender Jehanna's Sacred Stone, making Jehanna's Sacred Stone the third Stone to be destroyed. Queen Ismaire was then dealt a mortal blow by the general.
Princess Eirika arrived at Jehanna Hall and battled with Carlyle and Grado's troops. Grado was defeated, and Carlyle slain, before Princess Eirika was able to find Queen Ismaire, who was able to recognize the myrmidon Joshua as her long-lost son and heir before passing away. There was no time to grieve however, as General Caellach had managed to set Jehanna Hall on fire, forcing Princess Eirika and company to abandon it. Outside, General Caellach and General Valter were waiting to siege the now shelter-less company.
It was to this scene that Prince Ephraim arrived. With the new reinforcements, Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim were able to decisively defeat Grado's army under the two generals. General Caellach and General Valter were slain. After the battle, Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim relayed to their company what they had learned, and decided to return to Renais Castle to liberate their people and to retrieve the Sacred Stone, because they had now learned that their true enemy was none other than the Demon King.
Second Battle of Renais Castle[]
Although the Grado Empire had been defeated and their capital taken, there were still significant remnants of Grado Imperial forces abroad, if not in the Grado Empire itself. One of those places with significant Grado troops was Renais Castle, the home of Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim. These troops were under the command of none other than the traitor, Sir Orson, who neglected the realm to dote on his resurrected wife, Monica. So, when Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim arrived home once more, they were dismayed to find the place desolate and barren, and resolved to defeat Sir Orson and restore their people to prosperity. The twins marched on the capital, decisively defeated the remnants of Grado's military there, and killed Sir Orson, as well as the resurrected Monica.
After the battle, the twins were able to unlock the room to the Sacred Stone of Renais with the power of their bracelets, and resolved to travel to Rausten to obtain the Sacred Stone of Rausten, the only other remaining Sacred Stone.
Battle of the Narube River[]
The allied army was not the only group heading to Rausten, however, and the Frelian army was ambushed and decimated at the Narube River by Prince Lyon/the Demon King. The pegasus knight Syrene was the only engaged Frelian to survive the brutal onslaught, and she sought to protect several civilians who had been displaced by the Grado remnants. Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim arrived just in time to aid her in defeating the remnants of the Grado Empire here, and then confronted Prince Lyon, whose soul was being devoured by the Demon King and whose body was controlled by him. Although Prince Lyon was defeated, he was able to retreat to Nelaras Peak, but he was tracked by Frelian scouts and discovered quickly.
Battle at Nelaras Peak[]
Nelaras Peak is a volcanic mountain, and is thus hot, with sulfuric air and fumes, and is very difficult to traverse. This also made the Peak an excellent place for monsters to make their homes. Prince Lyon lured the company into the crags of the Peak, infested with gorgons, in the hopes that the Peak would do what Grado could not, and end the company. However, Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim proved to be just as resilient against monsters as they were other humans, and they were able to crush the gorgons.
However, the Demon King was able to fool the Prince and Princess into giving him the Sacred Stone of Renais, which he then crushed before disappearing once more. Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim continued to Rausten Court, weary and exhausted, and disheartened as they recognized that their friend was truly gone.
Battle at Rausten Court[]
On arriving at the capital of Rausten, the company settled down to rest before finally confronting the Demon King in the Darkling Woods. General Riev, the last remaining Grado general, chose to attack Rausten Court and kill Emperor Mansel and destroy the last Sacred Stone. The company was awakened to find Rausten Court attacked from all points of entry, and scrambled to defend against the attack. The palace guard of Rausten was also, naturally engaged, but were very much out of their depth, and so the majority of the fighting fell to the allied army.
Although General Riev's attack was a surprise assault, the company were able to defeat the last major remnant of Grado's forces, and protect both Emperor Mansel and Rausten's Sacred Stone. General Riev escaped the battle and fled to the Dark Temple.
Battle of the Dark Temple[]
After the surprise attack was successfully repelled, the allied army marched to the Darkling Woods, where they discovered the Dark Temple of the Demon King. Outside the Temple was a force of monsters led by General Riev and the Draco Zombie of the Manakete Chief, Morva, who had previously aided mankind in their battle against the Demon King 800 years ago, as well as the adopted father of Myrrh. The allied army refused to be denied, and the Draco Zombie and General Riev were both slain before the allied army made their way into the temple.
Once inside, they were faced by resistance by more monsters under the control of the possessed Lyon. However, even these monsters did not have the ability to halt the progress of the allied army either, and eventually Prince Lyon's body was slain. But it was a ruse, the Demon King required the Prince's body as a sacrifice for his resurrection in his original body.
The Demon King's elation at once again having his body was short-lived, however, as the allied army used the Sacred Stone of Rausten to once again imprison the soul of the Demon King, and then used the Sacred Twins of their nations to finally destroy the Demon King's body forever. With the defeat of the Demon King, the War of the Stones reached its final conclusion, and peace returned to Magvel.
