—Xander to Corrin, Chapter 24 (Conquest)
Xander is a major playable character from Fire Emblem Fates on the Conquest and Revelation routes. The eldest of the Nohrian royal siblings, he is the crown prince of the country, commanding the loyalty of Laslow and Peri as his personal retainers.
He plays a supporting role in Fire Emblem Heroes, in which he acts as Princess Veronica's general. As Veronica's subordinate, he takes an antagonistic role toward the Order of Heroes in Books I and II, but this shifts as Veronica's relationship with the Order changes in later Books.
Profile[]
Fire Emblem Fates[]
The eldest son and the eldest child of five in the Nohrian royal family and the son of king Garon and the first queen, Katerina, Xander personally supervised Corrin's combat training when they were adopted into the family during their childhood.
Xander is known to have been born with no exceptional talents, being physically weak and having an introverted personality in his youth. According to his Japanese support with Corrin in Warriors, he was criticized by courtiers for being "unbecoming" for a Crown Prince because he was too withdrawn, an image he attempted to fix by adopting a serious demeanor. Additionally, he reveals to his son that whenever he was overly pressured in making a public speech, he would pretend that he was speaking in front of a group of rabbits (carrots in the Japanese version) in order to calm himself. As he confides to Sakura through their supports, Xander eventually overcame his shyness by forcing himself to talk to his father, King Garon, whom he had considered to be the most terrifying person he had ever known. Despite starting out poorly with a sword, Xander trained vigorously so as to gain the rights to wield the legendary sword Siegfried, eventually becoming one of the strongest people in Nohr and being one of only four people to have passed the Rainbow Sage's trials prior to the events of the game.
According to the supports shared between Elise and her retainer Arthur, Xander used to be much more doting and happy during her adolescence, and was even known to have enjoyed joking and playing with her. This same support also reveals that due to Garon being cold and ruthless even in his treatment of her, Xander used to act as a surrogate father towards her, providing her with the care and support that she needed. However, his change in personality and demeanor due to the stress of warfare have since caused her to step away from him, as she feels that it is more important for her brother to devote his fullest attention to his duties instead of indulging her.
He was given more backstory details in his support with Takumi in Warriors, which suggests a more prideful and reckless phase of his past life. He admits that similarly to Takumi, he used to train excessively out of pride that his skill with the sword could improve overnight, only to later realize to be useless, as his constant overworking drove him to become heavily bedridden from exhaustion in turn. Moreover, he recalled to have wandered off by himself to fight Faceless in order to test his ability, only to lose his way in Nohr's dark forests and wander lost for days, which resulted in him returning to the castle "parched and near death". The Japanese version offers a different version to this story, as he stated that he got lost in the forest finding Faceless to battle, but was able to return safely by the end of that same day. However, getting lost in the forest wasn't the sole outcome of his recklessness, as he was additionally harshly rebuked by his father.
Xander had two different retainers prior to Peri and Laslow. During a battle with the Hoshidan army, Xander's forces were overwhelmed and the two sent Xander away, fending off the enemy so he could retreat; as a result, both were killed in battle. While retainer-less for some time, he eventually found two new ones. The first was Peri, whom Xander had discovered at a noble's combat tournament. Despite placing third, her character and potential had impressed him enough to name her as his retainer. Later, Garon assigned a mysterious swordsman to him. Initially suspicious, Xander battled his second retainer, barely winning and was greatly impressed with his skill.
Prior to the events of Fates, Xander arrested Hans for unknown charges (which is a rewrite from the localization, as it has never been stated that Xander caught Hans himself in the Japanese version.) Even though Garon eventually released Hans for supposedly good behavior, Xander continued to remain suspicious of Hans.
Prologue[]
Xander makes his first formal appearance in Chapter 1, where he, under the orders of King Garon, tests Corrin's strength through a mock duel in the Northern Fortress. During the duel, Xander urges Corrin to attack at him with no hesitation, informing them that their reward for landing at least one blow on him is the opportunity to leave the Northern Fortress. After inflicting a substantial amount of damage on Corrin, he unveils a Dragon Vein spot on the rooftop, ordering them to use it and recover before coming at him again. With determination, Corrin bests Xander in battle. Happy that he has completed Garon's orders, Xander, alongside the rest of his siblings, takes Corrin to Castle Krakenburg in order to seek an audience with Garon.
Upon reaching the throne room in Chapter 2, Xander and his siblings look on as Garon presents the cursed blade Ganglari to Corrin. They are then compelled to watch from the sidelines as Corrin is pitted against a number of Hoshidan prisoners, comprising of Kaze, Rinkah and a number of other soldiers. After the battle, when Corrin refuses to kill the defeated Kaze and Rinkah, Garon orders Xander to kill them instead. Although reluctant, Xander prepares to comply with his orders but is stopped by Corrin's adamant struggle to spare the prisoners from coming under further harm. To diffuse the situation, Leo swiftly steps in and appears to kill Kaze and Rinkah with Brynhildr. After Garon departs from the throne room, Leo indirectly reveals the truth of what he has done, and Xander thereafter issues orders to the nearby guards to bring the prisoners' "corpses" to his private quarters. Kaze and Rinkah are later brought outside the castle, where Xander curtly informs them that they have been spared because of Corrin's kindness. He then orders them to make their escape before Garon is alerted to their status.
When Garon later orders Corrin to check a supposedly abandoned Hoshidan fort near the Bottomless Canyon in Chapter 3, Garon offers the assistance of Hans for their mission. Xander, suspicious of Hans, warns Corrin not to let their guard down near him. Feeling uneasy about the situation, Xander leads the rest of his siblings to follow Corrin to the Bottomless Canyon, arriving in the nick of time to save them from being slain by Saizo, a Hoshidan ninja and one of Ryoma's retainers. Ordering Corrin to depart with Gunter first, Xander does not see them again until the onset of Chapter 6, when the forces of Hoshido and Nohr clash at the Plains of Hoshido.
Birthright[]
If Corrin chooses to side with Hoshido, Xander tells them that even though he was aware of their Hoshidan lineage, he and the other Nohrian siblings have thought of them as family when they came to Nohr, and desperately attempts to change their mind to no avail. When Corrin accuses Garon of being evil, Xander changes his stance and turns hostile, striking them mercilessly with his blade. As he is about to perform the final blow, Ryoma intervenes by deflecting his blow and attacking him, threatening to cut him down if he continues attempting to attack Corrin. The Nohrian army is defeated shortly after this, and they are thereafter forced to make their retreat.

Xander makes his next appearance again in Chapter 12, where he appears at the Opera House in Cyrkensia. Seeing Corrin daring to point their blade at Garon, he coldly brands them a traitor, and alongside Laslow and Peri, closes in on them with the intention of slaying them. Xander fails to succeed in this attempt as Corrin, with Azura's timely assistance, manages to flee the Opera House through a secret passageway, though Xander manages to catch up with Corrin, and as he attempts to kill them for treason, Elise intervenes and shields them, giving them the opportunity to make their escape. Xander warns them that he will find them and their fight will come in the foreseeable future.
Xander next appears in front of the doors leading into the throne room of Castle Krakenburg in Chapter 21, where he spots Elise eavesdropping on Garon's monologue. Initially warning her that she could be executed for treason if she is caught, Xander softens his stance when she begins to cry, lamenting over the fact that the war is ruining her beloved family. He then promises to end the war and bring them back together.
Xander appears in the training grounds of Castle Krakenburg in Chapter 26, where he, prior to the entry of Corrin's army, urges Laslow and Peri to stay and not fight Corrin, as he bears no wish for them to be killed in battle. He then departs and enters the main combat hall, where he confronts Corrin and challenges them to a one-on-one duel. Despite Elise's objections, Xander forces her to stay out of it and proceeds with the duel. Corrin and Xander engage in a duel, with Xander dominating the fight. However, as he deals the killing blow to his former sibling, Elise runs in and intercepts it, taking the full brunt of the blow. Seized with shock and grief, Xander rushes to cradle his sister in his arms, whereupon she, in her death throes, pleads with him to end the war not just through his strength, but also his own kindness and love, perishing shortly after.
In spite of her death, Xander demands Corrin to continue their duel, much to their incredulous outrage. At this point, Laslow and Peri enter the training grounds, and upon seeing Elise's body, immediately attribute her death to Corrin and summon Nohrian troops to attack the Hoshidan army. Although Xander objects to their interference, the two choose to defy him, asserting that they would rather fight instead of watching him die without taking any action. Xander's duel with Corrin eventually concludes with them emerging victorious. As he lays dying, he reveals that he had not fought at his full strength and had done what he did simply because of his position as Nohr's crown prince. After lamenting over the possibility of fighting alongside Corrin in an alternate world (referencing Conquest), Xander asks them to put a stop to Garon before succumbing to his wounds.
Xander appears one final time in the Endgame, where he, alongside Elise, Lilith and Flora, manifests in Corrin's dream and provides them with warm encouragement and support to aid them in their struggle against the draconic Garon.
Conquest[]
If Corrin chooses to side with Nohr, Ryoma, horrified and cross at their decision, demands to know the rationale behind their decision. After a brief exchange of words where Xander is alerted to the explosion of Ganglari in Hoshido, Ryoma attempts to attack Corrin, only to have his blows deflected by Xander. The Hoshidan army is defeated shortly after this, and they are thereafter forced to make their retreat.

After the battle, Xander and his siblings head to the throne room of Castle Krakenburg in Chapter 7, where Garon praises Xander for his battle exploits. A brief discourse between Garon and the Nohrian siblings sees him ordering Xander to kill Corrin after they question him on the explosion of Ganglari. Garon only reconsiders when Corrin offers to kill themselves by their own hand before conducting a séance with an effigy of Anankos on the ceiling. He then makes the decision to allow Corrin to return to Nohr, but only on the condition that they suppress a rebellion in the Ice Tribe. Xander, relieved at these new tidings, immediately offers to aid Corrin with his best troops, only for Garon to order Corrin to complete the task alone. After the rest of the Nohrian siblings vacate the throne room, Xander remains in front of the closed doors, where he overhears Garon monologuing his malicious intent to subject Corrin to true despair. This prompts Xander to send Elise, her retainers and Corrin's childhood friend, Silas, to reinforce Corrin.
Shortly after Corrin's return to Castle Krakenburg in Chapter 12, Iago sends them to Palace Macarath under the guise of allowing them to relax, when he, in actuality, intends for them to be ambushed by Ryoma's forces by warning him of their location. However, Xander's retainers, Laslow and Peri, appear before the ensuing battle, revealing that they were send by him to bolster Corrin's forces, also foiling Iago's schemes as they route Ryoma's forces.
Xander does not appear again until Chapter 16, where he attacks Corrin to test their reflexes just before they board a ship that is en route to Hoshido. Reunited with his siblings and the rest of Corrin's army, Xander explains that he finally finished Garon's mission and tells them he will join them in the invasion of Hoshido. Xander proceeds to board the ship with them. Shortly after the Nohrian army boards the ship, a Nohrian soldier informs them that hostiles have boarded the ship, and Xander deduces them to be Hoshidan ninja due to the complexity of their heist. Upon discovering the leader of the supposed ninjas, Xander is surprised and slightly shocked that a Nohrian was using Hoshidan tactics.
After the battle, the leader introduces himself as Shura and states that he was the one who kidnapped Azura from the castle when she was young, having been hired by Yukimura. Camilla and Leo try to convince Corrin to execute him, but Xander silences them, stating that it is their decision to decide Shura's fate. If spared, Xander is slightly surprised with their decision but ensures that Garon is not aware that one of Azura's kidnappers is working with them. If killed, Xander is pleased with their decision and sends a messenger to inform Garon of it.
When Xander and his siblings enter Izumo in Chapter 18 with the intention of relaxing from the chaos of warfare, they stumble upon the Hoshidan siblings. Xander immediately launches into a heated exchange of hostilities with Ryoma, and both crown princes then attempt to engage in a duel, only to be stopped by Izana, the duke of Izumo. Izana proceeds to confiscate the weapons of both parties, and Ryoma later seeks an audience with Corrin while they are in the midst of speaking with Xander. Before Ryoma is able to properly start a conversation, Izana emerges with two soldiers and apprehends him. Izana then unveils himself to be but a guise used by the deceptive Zola to kidnap the Hoshidan royals. Xander, not wanting to fight a dishonest war, decides to free the Hoshidan royals with Corrin and their army assisting him. Following the end of the ensuing battle, Xander and his siblings join the Hoshidans in a feast. Despite the fact that they are still at war, they uphold Izumo's pact of neutrality.
Later in Chapter 21, as Corrin's army ascends the Eternal Stairway in a bid to enter the realm of Hoshido, they are ambushed by a horde of Faceless. Camilla, somehow aware that Garon is responsible for the ambush, (when it was actually Iago sending the Faceless to ambush them) airily wonders why he has sent them to attack Corrin's army, Xander is also confused, as he knows Garon wouldn't send that much Faceless. The Nohrian royals barely manage to escape the Faceless ambush, with Lilith being the only casualty. Corrin is left to wonder what their purpose is when they could not protect Lilith. However, with Xander's encouragement, they move on as that is what Lilith would have wanted. Corrin tells Lilith that they will meet again one day on the other side and talk of old times.
In Chapter 22, after the Nohrian army succeeds in breaking through the defense of Fort Jinya staged by Yukimura, they take the surviving Hoshidans prisoner, with Xander personally promising to keep them safe. However, Hans and Iago enter the scene at this point, whereupon Hans embarks on a killing spree. Corrin attempts to stop them, but Iago refuses to listen to them. Xander, enraged by their insolence, orders for them to desist or die by his blades, only for Garon to enter the scene and overwrite his order, curtly stating that he will kill him and Corrin if they dare disobey. With much reluctance, Xander and Corrin are forced to comply with Garon's order.
In Chapter 24, having arrived in the area of the castle, Iago then reveals the plans for the invasion of the castle, with his men attacking from the rear while Corrin's forces go in through the front, to which Corrin reluctantly agrees to Iago's plan, followed by Iago stating that their forces will meet in the throne room; Xander states that he doesn't like Iago's plan any more than Corrin does, but that they must stay strong and any faltering means the world pays the price. Xander then brings up how Camilla once told him that Corrin once asked her where justice lies, to which they state that she didn't have any more answers than they do; Xander reveals that justice is an illusion and that there is no light path always leading to good nor is there a dark path leading to evil, and believing otherwise is to see only half the picture and all that matters are their own choices, especially the hard ones. Xander also states that letting innocents die is a tragedy, but letting the chance for peace slip away is likewise, and there is no such thing as a clean victory when lives are on the line, asking Corrin to desire to do what they thinks is right and protect their loved ones while seeing their vision of a peaceful future to its end.
Following the capture of Castle Shirasagi in Chapter 25, Xander and his siblings are left waiting outside the throne room with Hans and Iago after Garon marches inside in a wave of triumph in Chapter 26. While Xander is in the midst of conversing with his siblings, Iago makes a failed attempt to assassinate Corrin after finding out they spared Hinoka. Much to Iago's horror, Xander steps before Corrin and chooses to take their side before challenging him and Garon's loyalist to a duel, asserting his displeasure with his deceitful crimes and destroying Nohr's honor and warns him that Garon is no longer protecting him and Iago will die by his blades. He is quickly joined by the rest of his siblings, and together, they manage to kill Hans and all of Garon's loyalists, and Leo personally executes Iago once and for all, providing retribution to the innocent lives lost at the hands of the pair. Following the conclusion of the battle, Corrin, much to Xander's incredulity and disbelief, reveals that the war isn't over yet, as there is one more person they need to kill, which is Garon himself, revealing that Garon is no longer human and cannot be saved, but they must kill him to truly end the war.
In Chapter 27, Corrin leads the Nohrian siblings to the throne room to kill Garon and end the war. Elise and Leo voice their suspicions, asking if they are telling the truth about Garon being a monster and also why they didn't tell them sooner. Azura tells them they cannot explain, but only to show them by making Garon sit on the throne, which will expose his true form. Corrin pleads their case to listen. Xander reluctantly agrees to this, though he admits that he is only following them because they have led them to numerous victories over their enemies. He warns them that if they are luring them into a trap, he would cut them down as a traitor despite their bonds. As they open the doors to the throne room, they find an slimy monstrosity revealed to be Garon sitting on the throne.
In their disbelief, Elise, Camilla and Leo refuse to fight their father, but Xander is undaunted, believing in Corrin and stopping Garon from killing them and affirming that the monster is no longer his father, referring to his real father as doting and loving, stern, but fair, not using his strength against his children or needlessly conquering another kingdom. When Xander tells Corrin that he will lend him his strength, Xander's Siegfried reacts with Corrin's Grim Yato, causing it to transform into Shadow Yato, granting them additional leverage in the fight against Garon. Xander convinces the siblings to put aside their disbelief and fight alongside Corrin to put an end to Garon. The Nohrian siblings all declare they will fight Garon alongside Corrin, and the proper fight begins.
Shortly after Garon is killed, the Nohrian siblings have barely any time to process their grief and shock before they are caught off guard by a sudden attack launched by Takumi, who has been possessed with dark energy. As Corrin walks towards Takumi with the intent of letting him kill them, they are struck when Grim Yato fails to deflect an attack launched by a single arrow shot by Skadi, causing them to slip into a state of unconsciousness. As the possessed Takumi tortures the Nohrian siblings in the Endgame, Corrin regains consciousness and aids them in ending the possessed Takumi's rampage once and for all.
With the death of both Garon and Takumi, Xander is, shortly after the final battle, crowned as the new king of Nohr and makes peace with Hoshido, ending their conflict. The Conquest storyline ends with Xander and his siblings standing by Garon's former throne room at Castle Krakenburg, and Xander reflects on the senseless war waged in Nohr's name. Vowing to preserve the peace they have earned, the Nohrian siblings vow to turn Nohr in a better direction and establish ties with Hoshido. To ensure they stay on that path, they ask Corrin to guide them, an offer they accept.
Following his rise to the throne, Xander enforced several radical policies that were unpopular with the Nohrian population. Years later, scholars note how important these policies were for Nohr's future growth.
Revelation[]
Due to having formed a deep emotional attachment with both families, Corrin refuses to pick a side. Despite their desperate protests, Xander and Ryoma cross blades in an attempt to sway them into choosing a side. In a bid to prevent both armies from battling each other and retreat from the Plains of Hoshido, Corrin takes down their frontline commanders, resulting in both sides labeling Corrin as a traitor.

Xander returns later in Chapter 13, where he and the Nohrian army arrive in the ruined streets of Cyrkensia, accusing the Hoshidans of invading and destroying the neutral nation. Like Ryoma and the Hoshidan army, he is unaware that invisible soldiers from Valla are responsible for destroying the town.
After the battle, Xander and Ryoma continue to maintain their hostility. Azura intervenes by singing a melody to calm their enraged minds. As Xander prepares to leave the scene thereafter, he is stopped by Corrin, who urges him to go to the suspension bridge above the Bottomless Canyon on the day that the skies above Nohr and Hoshido change, promising to reveal the truth of their cause to him. He responds by brushing their words off as nothing more than those of a traitor before leaving.
Xander later appears in Chapter 14, where he is greeted by Iago at the grand staircase of Castle Krakenburg. Commenting that Iago's greeting is uncommon, he then heads to the throne room, where he is joined by Leo. Here, Leo attempts to inform him that Garon's crazed condition has gotten worse, only for him to attempt to attribute this to the stress of warfare. When Leo directs his attention to the throne and he witnesses Garon declaring that Hoshido and Nohr mean nothing to him, Xander is forced to admit that something is wrong with his father. As Leo presses on to divulge his suspicion that their father is being controlled by the "true enemy" that Corrin has talked about, Xander cuts him off before indicating his intention to ready his best troops to meet Corrin at the Bottomless Canyon.
Xander next appears in Chapter 17, where he and Leo enter the vicinity of the Bottomless Canyon to reinforce Corrin's army with their retainers just as they are preparing to fend against a battalion of Nohrian forces led by Iago after they had just defeated Hans and his forces. He apologizes to Corrin for having taken so long to realize the truth, and immediately battles the enemy in front of them.
Xander subsequently aids Corrin's effort to put an end to Anankos' machinations. As soon as the heroes finally enters Valla, but shortly around the same time of Scarlet's death while protecting Corrin from Anankos' spy, in Chapter 19, Leo and Xander finds a similar statue which Garon use to worship on his throne at Nohr, they soon realize that Corrin was right, and the Garon they saw now had been one of Anankos' undead servants all along, thus vowing to avenge their father's honor for what Anankos had tarnished.
After Anankos is killed, Xander and Ryoma create a new bond between their countries and forge new ties with the newly-reinstated kingdom of Valla led by Corrin. Xander also becomes the new king of Nohr. If he marries Female Corrin, Valla and Nohr will be united.
Paralogue[]
In Paralogue 15, Xander, accompanied by Leo, heads to a swamp in the Deeprealms to reunite with his son Siegbert. Upon meeting with Siegbert, Xander immediately engages him in conversation, during which his son excitedly updates him on the diligence he has practiced in applying himself to various fields of study. Midway through their conversation, they are interrupted when a pair of invisible enemies manifest in the vicinity, signaling the arrival of an enemy invasion. This prompts Siegbert to get up and engage the enemy in a hurry. Xander then leads Corrin's army in a battle to purge the surrounding forests of Siegbert's Deeprealm of the invading invisible troops.
Following the conclusion of the battle, Xander, out of concern for Siegbert, demands to know why his son had chosen not to inform him of the frequent invasions of the invisible soldiers. Upon learning that this is entirely due to Siegbert desiring to live up to his father's title by shouldering some of his burdens, Xander commends him for his courage. He then apologizes to Siegbert for not having executed his duties of a father well, prompting his son to request to join him on his travels. Although he initially tries to dissuade Siegbert, Xander eventually agrees to allow him to join Corrin's army and fight alongside him.
Fire Emblem Heroes[]
Xander appears and serves as a boss in Chapter 2 and Chapter 9 of Book I. While most Heroes are forced to fight the Order of Heroes due to their contract with the Emblian Empire, Xander is the only character to serve Veronica, the princess and leader of the Emblian Empire, of his own volition out of sympathy for her.
At the end of Chapter 4 of Book II, Xander disagrees with Surtr's desire to destroy an Askran town as the Order of Heroes has already fled, yielding no benefit. When Surtr shows signs of dismantling their alliance, Xander, though aware of his immense power, is willing to fight him until Loki informs them that the town was already evacuated by Prince Alfonse.
During Chapter 8, when Veronica is "invited" by Loki and then threatened by Surtr into going to the Kingdom of Múspell, Xander protects her against Surtr's attack that was interrupted before, but the both of them are effortlessly defeated, with Xander's arm being broken in the process. Veronica orders Xander to escape, but he refuses. Veronica then concedes into going with them in exchange for Xander's life. He is then left by the duo after learning that they intend to sacrifice Veronica as an offering to the Kingdom of Flame.
In Book VI, Xander plays a small but pivotal role in the fight against Embla. He secretly receives the Yggdrasil Key from Bruno and passes it off to Veronica, allowing the princess to cure herself of the curse that allowed Embla to take control of her as she could other members of the Emblian royal bloodline.
Personality[]
A paragon of patriotism and fealty to Nohr, Xander acts as expected of his title as Crown Prince. He is a valiant warrior and the first one to charge into battle for the sake of glory for Nohr. Any order of King Garon is completed with utmost perfection, even when he does not wholeheartedly agree with the intentions or the immediate results. For the sake of his people, and most importantly his father, he believes that the ends will justify the means. While a harsh judge of character, he proves to ultimately be a shrewd leader who can see the best in people, even in the likes of his own retainer Peri for example, that other people may show pause or concern. This does not mean that he is completely accepting as he has his own opinions of certain nefarious individuals, even ones allied with his father, like Hans and Iago.
While his priorities are set on bolstering Nohr's interests, Xander is at his core a family-man. Despite the dark history of the Nohrian royal family, especially in wake of his mother's death and the ensuing power struggle between Garon's concubines, Xander shows true affection and care for his younger half-siblings. He frequently makes time at home whenever not out in battle or missions to spend time with his siblings, showing a surprising amount of knowledge of their preferences, hobbies, and habits. Even Camilla, who is incredibly knowledgeable of her siblings quirks, admits that Xander's knowledge rivals her. Corrin, his adoptive sibling, receives similar care and is one of their primary combat instructors alongside Gunther. He affectionately calls them "Little Prince/Princess" whenever giving counsel and has always held the belief that Corrin will do great things for the sake of Nohr. He will sometimes circumvent his father's orders if it will affect his sibling's well-being and has taken blame for their actions. However, on the battlefield, should any of them turn on Nohr, Xander shows no mercy on them and openly considers them an enemy such as Corrin in Birthright and Revelation or Camilla in Revelation.
Like Camilla and Leo, Xander cares for his step-sister, Azura and wanted to spend more time with her. In his support with Azura, he offered for her to attend meetings with him regularly even though he was aware of Azura's mistreatment by the Nohrians. In their Warriors support, Xander reveals that he's always thought of Azura as a younger sister. He always talks sincerely to her and felt like he lost a family member when Azura was kidnapped.
Xander has also been depicted multiple times in supports as a humble person who delights in bringing happiness to others without inviting any attention to himself. This extends to situations when it is blatantly obvious that he is responsible for the happiness experienced by others, where he will take the pains to stage arguments in order to conceal his involvement. In this regard, he is known to have gone so far as to outright deny claims that he has provided aid to others.
Having seen numerous battlefields, Xander is commonly depicted as battle-worn, having come to terms with the numerous lives he has taken for his country. As his supports with Nyx indicates, he is guilty from having taken so many lives and often wishes for death rather than to continue living with his crimes. He notes that his view of the world is more grey compared to Corrin's black-and-white outlook, believing that no one is truly evil, but merely shades of right and wrong that stems from their character. This is most reflected in his choice to have Peri as a retainer who, despite having sociopathic tendencies, he trusts with his life and does not force her to change her ways. He does not tolerate cowardice or needless slaughter, and is willing to cut the aggressor down to maintain Nohr's honor, as shown with Kotaro, when it was revealed he attempted to force Hoshido to surrender using Kagero as bait, Zola, when he attempts to win the war in a cowardly way by trying to kill the unarmed Hoshidans, and Iago and Hans, when they attempted to kill Corrin for sparing Hinoka.
Having lost two retainers in the past who sacrificed themselves to protect him, Xander's relationship with his two current retainers Peri and Laslow transcend the typical Lord-Retainer relationship. Prior to dueling Corrin in Birthright, he ordered his two retainers to stay behind to avoid needless sacrifice, but when they disobeyed, it caused him immense grief.
Xander has a never-ending obsession to improve himself due to lacking natural talent, a fact alluded to in his support conversation with Sakura, and admitted by himself in his support with Frederick. He reveals that due to not been born gifted, he has always been extremely diligent and serious in learning things or training so as to make himself competent. Furthermore, despite respecting Marth's opinion that he is indeed already very skilled and needs no further improvement, he disagrees and still firmly believes that he is not good enough.
He has the best handwriting in the entire army.

Base Class Set[]
Even among the most powerful mid-game prepromotes in the series, Xander stands as one of the strongest combat units Fates has to offer. Right from the moment he is recruited, Xander is already an impressive offensive force in the army, given his 8 Movement range and near-perfect mastery of Swords. This fact is further complemented by his personal weapon Siegfried, boasting an impressive Might of 11, increasing his Dodge by 10 and Defense by 4, alongside allowing him to attack enemies at range. Aside from his poor Resistance growth, Xander's growths in other stat departments are quite decent, allowing him to be molded into a well-rounded unit. Starting out as a Paladin, he already has access to the basic Cavalier skills, with Elbow Room being particularly ideal for use in the open areas that define most of the late-game maps in Conquest and Revelation. As a Paladin, Xander stands to learn Defender, which helps support his growing stats when paired up with another character. He will also learn Aegis, which will help him tank against attacks inflicted with Bows, Shurikens and Magic. This skill is best utilized when fending against magic-wielding units, as it offsets Xander's poor Resistance.
As part of the Cavalier class set, Xander can also access Great Knight, which offers Luna and Armored Blow. Luna increases his offense by ignoring the Defense of foes, and is especially useful in late-game sequences where high-Defense targets appear more often. Armored Blow further increases his impressive Defense, permitting him to take little or no damage when he initiates attacks.
Secondary Class Set[]
Xander's secondary class set is Wyvern Rider, entailing the Wyvern Lord and Malig Knight promotions. While this class set has much to offer to further boost his combat prowess, it is recommended to wait until he has learnt Aegis to offset his poor Resistance. The first two skills that Xander learns in this class set are Strength +2 and Lunge. Strength +2 is only useful when he is still in the midst of building up his Strength, and will lose its effectiveness over time. Lunge, conversely, is slightly more useful, allowing him to pull foes into the midst of the player's troops in order to effectively defeat them.
As a Wyvern Lord, Xander can learn Rally Defense and Swordbreaker. Rally Defense is not necessarily needed, as he works best as an offense unit instead of a support one. Swordbreaker, on the other hand, is far more useful, allowing him to fend against Sword-wielding foes like Swordmasters, Heroes and Master Ninjas, all of whom are renowned for their high Skill.
As a Malig Knight, Xander stands to learn Savage Blow and Trample, both of which are very useful in boosting his combat prowess. Savage Blow allows him to inflict damage on clumped enemies near him, while Trample allows him to deal more damage against non-mounted units. Since the player is most likely to face a good number of unmounted enemies, this skill allows him to stack extra damage on them.
Friendship Class[]
- Kaze: Kaze provides him with Ninja and its promotions, Master Ninja and Mechanist. From Ninja, the most useful skill for Xander to learn is Poison Strike, which takes off 20% of the target's HP if he is unable to kill them. Since Xander has access to the Wyvern Rider set, his access to Malig Knight for Savage Blow allows him to stack 40% instead of 20% against any hostile unit located close to him. Master Ninja offers Lethality, which is one of the few Hoshidan skills that Conquest players can access without purchasing from another player. Xander also stands to learn Shurikenfaire, although this skill is not needed unless he is kept in a class that wields Shurikens and Daggers. As a Mechanist, Xander can learn Golembane, which is not very useful due to the lack of Stoneborn and puppet-based foes in the game. He can also learn Replicate, which allows him to operate in two different sections of any given battlefield at any one time.
- Laslow: Laslow provides him with Mercenary and its promotions, Hero and Bow Knight. From Mercenary, Good Fortune replenishes HP with a Luck% of occurring. This benefits Xander due to his very high Luck growth. Strong Riposte increases the strength of Xander's attacks minimally only when he is under siege. As a Hero, however, Xander gains access to Sol, a very useful skill that allows him to replenish HP in battle, and Axebreaker, allowing him to fare better when facing Axe and Club-wielding foes in battle. As a Bow Knight, the only useful skill that he stands to learn is Shurikenbreaker, a skill that helps him to offset the proficiency of Shuriken-wielding foes accurately inflicting attacks and dodging hostile blows.
- Leo: Leo provides his brother with Dark Mage and its promotions, Sorcerer and Dark Knight. There is not much for Xander to learn in this set due to his lackluster Magic, although there are a few skills he stands to greatly benefit from. As a Sorcerer, Xander can learn Vengeance to stack more damage as his HP falls and Bowbreaker to deal with enemy Snipers who have high hit rates. As a Dark Knight, Xander can continue using Siegfried to learn Lifetaker, which permits him to restore his own HP when he defeats foes in battles that he initiates.
- Ryoma: Ryoma provides him with Samurai and its promotions, Swordmaster and Master of Arms. Of the three classes in this set, Swordmaster gives Xander the most benefits overall. For one, it allows him to learn the powerful Astra, which allows him to stack incremental damage against his foes. In addition to this, Xander also stands to learn Swordfaire, which boosts his natural proficiency in Swords by increasing his damage output with them equipped. The other two classes in the set are not without their benefits, however; Samurai's Vantage, for one, complements his devastating damage output well by permitting him to strike first and possibly take out potentially dangerous foes when he is low on HP. Master of Arms, on the other hand, provides Seal Strength to cripple heavy-hitting enemies and Life and Death for a more-risk-for-more-reward style of play.
Marriage Class[]
- Female Corrin: Corrin has the unique ability to give Xander classes he otherwise would not have access to, most notably from the Hoshidan side. Oni Savage is an interesting choice - Xander will be right at home as a Blacksmith, with his tanky growths while still retaining access to Siegfried. Lancebreaker from that class also lets him take down Lance wielders more easily. While he will be stuck with E rank Axes for a time, Oni Chieftain is worth considering too - Death Blow gives him an easier time landing critical hits, while Counter works well with his high Defense. Samurai is also useful in Conquest, although in Revelation he can gain this class by Friendship Sealing with Ryoma.
- Azura/Hinoka: Both Azura and Hinoka provide him with Sky Knight and its promotions, Falcon Knight and Kinshi Knight. From Sky Knight, Darting Blow can patch up Xander's semi-lackluster Speed growths, and Camaraderie can benefit him if there are a lack of healers near him by recovering a small amount of health; from Falcon Knight, Xander can get Rally Speed and Warding Blow. Rally Speed is rarely useful, as he fits an attacking role better than a support role; however, Warding Blow is extremely efficient due to his low Resistance growths, leading him to take less magical damage, which can stack with Aegis if it triggers. Finally, from Kinshi Knight, Xander gets access to Air Superiority and Amaterasu; Air Superiority can make him a lot more effective against fliers, who typically have high Speed, by making them easier to hit and dodge attacks from. Amaterasu can be utilized to heal those around him as a passive support skill, but preferably can be swapped out for a more offensive skill that benefits his well-rounded attacking role.
- Felicia: Felicia provides him with Troubadour and its promotions, Strategist and Butler. This class set is borderline-useless to Xander; Gentilhomme, Rally Resistance, and Inspiration all play to a supporting role instead of Xander's preferred offensive role, while Live to Serve can never be utilized at the same time as Xander's trademark sword Siegfried. Resistance +2 and Tomebreaker can help patch up his poor Resistance, but as a general rule of thumb this is a very poor marriage option for Xander (plus Felicia can get the Cavalier line from Jakob and Silas), and if pursued, its effects shall be mitigated with a more effective Friendship seal strategy or Logbook skills.
- Mozu: Mozu provides him with Archer and its promotions, Sniper and Kinshi Knight. There is little reason for Xander be in this line: his Skill is already high enough to the point where Skill+2 and Certain Blow will be unneeded, and Bowfaire is only helpful if the player wishes to reclass him to Bow Knight.
- Effie: Effie provides him with Knight and its promotions, General and Great Knight. Xander already has access to Great Knight from Cavalier, so this marriage only offers General. Defense+2 is largely unnecessary, as his Defense is already high enough as is. Natural Cover can be used in tandem with Elbow Room to allow Xander to benefit from most terrains. While Wary Fighter prevents him from doubling, his middling Speed growths rarely give him the opportunity for doubling anyway. Pavise helps reduce physical damage, which he should activate often due to his high Skill. He can use this in tandem with Aegis to become extremely durable.
- Peri/Nyx: Both Peri and Nyx provide him with Dark Mage and its promotions, Sorcerer and Dark Knight, the benefits of which are explained under Leo's section above.
- Charlotte: Charlotte provides him with Fighter and its promotions, Berserker and Hero. HP +5 makes Xander a bit more durable, while Gamble increases his critical hit rate at the cost of a slight loss in accuracy. The Berserker class can largely be ignored - Rally Strength is better used on support units, while Axefaire is only useful if the player wishes to reclass him to Hero.
- Selena: Selena provides him with Mercenary and its promotions, Hero and Bow Knight, the benefits of which are explained under Laslow's section above.
- Sakura: Sakura provides him with Monk and its promotions, Great Master and Onmyoji. From Monk, Xander learns Miracle, which can turn his solid Luck into a viable boost to his survivability. Monk's Rally Luck and Onmyoji's Rally Magic are both worthless to the offense-minded Xander, while Onmyoji's Tomefaire is only useful if the player makes Leo his A+ support to create a gimmicky Dark Knight build. Great Master, on the other hand, can be pretty beneficial if one plays their cards right: it gives Xander Renewal, whose 30% HP regeneration is never a bad thing, and Countermagic, a risky way to turn his low Resistance into an offensive advantage.

Base Set[]
Xander is one of the first Grand Hero battle units in Heroes and is easily accessible as a result. Unfortunately, as a free unit, he is mired by the fact that he cannot receive IVs to reallocate stats to enhance his strengths. He has tremendous physical bulk as well as a respectable Atk, making him a viable defensive wall. He trades this for low Spd, which prevents him from doubling most enemies, but this can be patched with skills easily. Xander has probably one of the most coveted skills built into his weapon, Siegfried. It naturally comes packing Distant Counter, allowing him to retaliate regardless of range. Blazing Light is an AOE special that inflicts damage in an area around the unit he targets based on the difference between his Atk and the foe's Def. Armored Blow increases his Def by 6 when initiating on an enemy and Spur Def increases the Def of adjacent allies by 4. With the Weapon Refine update of version 5.5, Siegfried and other weapons with innate Distant Counter were gifted with refines. Siegfried's unique refine, apart from granting more points of health, also debuffs the target's Atk and Def by 5 points, and negates follow-up attacks from said foe, as long as their health is equal or above 75% of its total. While this refine is not as impressive as the other, it does synergize with Xander's niche, and even allows him to one shot some troublesome foes.
Counters[]
Xander's magical resistance is incredibly low, leaving him vulnerable to a plethora of Blue mages like Reinhardt, Linde, Lute, and Ishtar and some Red mages like Celica and Winter Tharja. Both forms of Micaiah can easily one-shot him with Thani/Dawn Suzu's effective damage. This also leaves him weak to Dragons as well such as Nowi and Female Corrin. Any sort of physically bulky Blue and some bulky Reds can withstand his attacks including Effie, Nephenee, Tana, and Zelgius. Brave Lyn and Dazzling Staff wielders negates Siegfried's Distant Counter effect, though he can potentially survive the former's attack given his bulk. Finally, as a cavalry unit, he is weak to Ridersbane and Zanbato due to their effective damage against cavaliers.
Skill Inheritance[]
Xander is fairly straightforward as he is best built to tank and focus on enemy phase combat. Reposition is the movement assist skill best suited for him to allow him to move allies behind him and protect them from potential threats. Ignis or Bonfire naturally benefits from his high Def, Ignis for those seeking higher damage while Bonfire for those seeking higher activation chances. Quick Riposte for Skill B makes his Spd irrelevant as it allows him the means to double attack on counterattack. Close Def adds Def when attacked by any close range unit, though in particular this helps with Dragons as it can help him survive select Dragons while Steady Stance has the same defensive bulk, but allows him to better tank against Bows and Dagger units, focusing solely on all enemies who use physical weapons. Fury is also a worthy Skill A as the flat boosts to his four main stats, mainly his Atk and Def to a respectable 51 and 40 respectively. Skill C is flexible and can carry Threaten, Smoke, Hone, and Spur skills. As a Cavalier, skills for those units are also completely viable if focused on using that sort of team.

Base Set[]
Spring Xander is among the first seasonal units and is considered to be a poor unit. He is blessed with a decent mixed bulk, but he severely lacks the Atk to take full advantage of that, reaching a menial 38 at neutral and 42 thanks to his super boon in Atk. His Spd is just high enough to not be doubled by all units, but not high enough to prevent them from particularly threatening high tier units. Spring Xander's bulkiness is mainly due to his special Carrot Lance, which restores 4 HP after combat, granting him some means of health recovery. Swap allows him to switch places with an ally, potentially moving a vulnerable unit out of harms way so he can tank. Live for Honor grants 1.5x the badge rewards from completing a Training Tower map, helping the grind for badges to upgrade units and Seals. Fortify Defense boosts ally Def by 4 if he is next to them at the start of the turn.
Counters[]
Spring Xander is weak to Greens of any sort from bulky Greens like Hector, Amelia, and Surtr, mages like Nino, Cecilia, and Lewyn, and Dragons like Myrrh, Fae, and Female Kana. Magic oriented Blues like Reinhardt, Lute, and Ishtar can run through his lower Res and Blue Dragons like Female Corrin, Male Kana, and Nowi can do the same. Micaiah is especially dangerous with Thani's bonus damage and Mathilda or any unit who has inherited her Ridersbane are equally dangerous.
Skill Inheritance[]
Spring Xander is much like his base form, best suited to tanking. Unlike his base form, he can dual wall with his decent Res. Reposition is a better suited Assist to move allies behind him so he can tank hits. Ignis or Bonfire are safe choices as his Def is high enough for these special skills to add on significant damage. Skill A is a mix between either enhancing his physical bulk through Close Def, which also gives him a little more survivability against certain Dragons, or Steady Stance to focus on his physical tanking. He is also a worthy candidate for Fortress Def/Res, pushing both of his defensive stats by 6, bringing his neutral Def to 41 and Res to 32, though at the relatively small cost of 2 Atk. Quick Riposte ensures that he can double enemies that attack him. Skill C is flexible and can carry Threaten, Smoke, Hone, and Spur skills. As a Cavalier, skills for those units are also completely viable if focused on using that sort of team.

Base Set[]
Summer Xander is his first non-cavalry form and has become an Axe wielder. He retains his physical bulk and thanks to losing his cavalry status, has more stat points to work with, leading to a well balanced offensive stat spread at 46 Atk and 30 Spd at neutral. His only weakness is his low Res, but that is a common theme for his variations. Lilith Floatie grants +1 to Atk/Spd of allies within two spaces during combat, which is ultimately a small boost and will likely not provide much support other than bringing people out of the cusp of being doubled or push them over the edge to double. Bonfire pairs nicely with his high Def, leading to high damage when it activates. His two skills benefits from his high HP as Fire Boost grants him Atk 6 so long as he has at least 3 more HP than his opponent, which puts him over a large number of units, and Infantry Pulse which subtracts 1 cooldown from any ally at the start of Turn 1 whose HP is less than Summer Xander which, again, is a wide range of units. This can be beneficial in particular to mages.
Counters[]
Summer Xander's most glaring weakness is his low Res, which allows nearly all mages to ORKO him. Red and Green mages easily take care of him and even some Blue mages, like Reinhardt, Linde, and Ishtar can run through his low Res. Reds can also take care of him easily, especially fast ones like Ayra, Owain, and Karla who can easily double over his modest Spd. Bulky Reds like Zelgius and Ike can simply endure his attacks and retaliate with strong color advantage fueled attacks.
Skill Inheritance[]
Summer Xander has the luxury to be built to specialize in multiple roles and not stuck as a physical wall. Lilith Floatie's minimal effect can be replaced with a plethora of weapons, either going for full defensive or even offensive if the player desires. Regardless of build, Reposition is his best Assist skill to move allies out of harms way or even move another unit into the range of an enemy to protect him. If going for a defensive build, a Slaying Axe and its accelerated cooldown allows him to unleash his Special more often. He can run Steady Breath to further accelerate his cooldown as he will primarily be attacked and Quick Riposte ensures that he secures doubles. Alternatively, Renewal keeps his health topped off every other turn, making him extremely difficult to kill by physical units. Focusing on offensive prowess, Brave Axe allows him to secure a double on initiation and with a 40 Atk base, that does lead to significant damage, especially when his special is activated and when running Death Blow, bringing his Atk to 46 on initiation. Drag Back and Hit and Run allow him to run away after attacking, bringing him into range for an ally to rescue him or even Reposition him out of enemy range.

He once again retains similar traits of his other forms, particularly an emphasis on defensive bulk. He may have less Base Stat Totals than other Infantry units, but this is due to his newfound role as a refreshing unit, having the ability to Dance. While he will primarily be used for this role, he still has the means to be offensive with respectable Atk and the aforementioned physical bulk. Dusk Uchiwa is his default weapon which deals effective damage against cavalries and most interestingly, it completely disables skills that change attack priority, such as Vantage, giving him an interesting utility against units who rely on those types of skills. He packs Close Counter, allowing him to wall at any range and Quick Riposte which patches his low Spd to guarantee a follow up. Finally, Odd Def Wave grants +6 to adjacent allies at the start of odd numbered turns.
Counters[]
Festival Xander's low Res leaves him vulnerable to all Mages, especially since as a colorless unit, he has no color advantage. Raventome users, in particular both genders of Robin, Lyon, and Sophia, has the color advantage over him, more so if they have Triangle Adept equipped. Physically bulky units in general can withstand his attacks, even if he can retaliate against them. Dragons are particularly dangerous since they can target his much lower Res. He is also vulnerable to【Isolation】from Bridal Fjorm. While Mila can also inflict it on him, he is actually the only Dancer as of her release who can avoid being inflicted with 【Isolation】by her with either a combination of skills and/or a Def asset to push him past the Mila's Turnwheel Def threshold over either an unmerged, Def Flaw Mila or an unmerged Mila with neutral Def.
Skill Inheritance[]
Festival Xander can switch up his weapon to better suit the meta teams he'll face, but this is by no means mandatory. His only skill that he needs to inherit is simply a special, which either Ignis or Bonfire will fulfill fantastically when fueled by his Def. For a more traditional refresher unit, he can replace Quick Riposte with Wings of Mercy to teleport to wayward, injured allies to refresh out of danger. This puts the focus on support while reducing his combat prowess.

- Xander's circlet was given to him by Garon, according to one of his Private Quarters lines in the Japanese version.
- Xander has displayed actions and characteristics that could make him be categorized as a character of the Camus archetype. For instance, Xander saying that even though he knew what he was doing was wrong, him being the Crown Prince of Nohr gave him no choice in the matter resembles Camus, who could not side with Marth because he was a knight of Grust.
- Xander has more resemblances and loose connections to Camus in more ways beyond the similarity of their role within the two respective stories. Appearance wise, they have blond, wavy hair, and are dressed in black attires. Gameplay wise, they have their base class as Paladin and wield a legendary weapon. Moreover, the "Sieg" part in the name of Xander's sword Siegfried and his son's name Siegbert share the same katakana spelling with Zeke, Camus's alias in Gaiden/Echoes.
- A running gag with Xander is his inability to swim. It is first mentioned in the Beach Brawl conversation between Peri and Laslow. This fact is brought up multiple times in other Fates DLC chapters and as well as his special Heroes variations in Heroes.
- Erroneously in Xander and Leo's localized B support, Leo mentions that swimming is something he excels in. This is not mentioned in the Japanese version of said support.
- Xander shares his critical quote "You're right where I want you" with his retainers Peri and Laslow.
- Xander shares the same battle animations with Mercenary when he is shown fighting dismounted during cutscenes.
- On the other hand, if left equipped with a lance or naginata before a cutscene and features him dismounted in it, he uses the same battle animation of the Spear Fighter.
- Xander is the first character in Heroes whose holiday event-exclusive variation became available before the regular variation.
- Xander is the second most recurring named enemy in the series, appearing as an enemy in six different chapters. Takumi has the most with being fought in seven different chapters.
- In Heroes, Xander is the first Grand Hero to appear in the main story chapters and paralogues.
- In Heroes, Xander's Grand Hero Battle map is based on Fates: Conquest Chapter 12.
- In Warriors, Xander's promotion to Crown Prince is a reference to his Cipher class, Nohrian King.
- Xander's support conversation with Lissa in Warriors suggests that he is taller than Frederick and Ryoma.
- Xander's underwear in his Warriors broken armor model features the Nohrian Emblem on its back, similar to his Beach skin where the Emblem is featured on the sides of his swim trunks.
