—Yunaka to Alear and Alfred in Chapter 6
Yunaka is a character from Fire Emblem Engage. She is an thief who is more than she appears.
Profile[]
Yunaka is first encountered as Alear and their forces head to the shrine housing the Ring of the Dawn Maiden. According to her, she heard it speak to her and ask her to deliver it to the Divine Dragon. The ring instructed her to head to Firene, which she headed to in order to deliver the ring. En route to the capital, she was attacked by bandits and dropped the ring. After introducing herself to Alear and informing Alfred of the situation, they agree to help her search for the ring.
Yunaka sees a nearby ghost town that had been taken over by bandits and spots a ring on the hand of one of the bandits. She and Alear split up from the rest of their forces to ambush the bandit and recover the ring. Alear entrusts the ring to Yunaka in the ensuing battle. After the battle, Yunaka admits that she stole the ring from the shrine as she was strapped for money. While she could have fled after Alear gave her the ring, her resonance with Micaiah led her to stick around. Alear decides to recruit her into their forces, seeing value in her skills, an offer she accepts.

Yunaka is not merely a thief, but a trained assassin. Despite having been some time since she has killed anyone as one, she is somewhat known in certain Brodia circles as Citrinne reveals in her C-Support with Yunaka. Yunaka reveals to Alear in one of her later supports with them that her birth name was Larimar. In one of her supports with Citrinne, she explains that after being abandoned by her parents, she was adopted by an assassin and was taught how to be a trained killer herself. While she bore little love for her foster father, she remained with him to repay his willingness to take her in. When he contracted a fatal illness, she accepted his request to give him a swift death and took up the name Yunaka in hopes of leaving her past behind.
Personality[]
Sprightly and bubbly, Yunaka is an excitable young woman with high energy, contrary to what one would expect of a thief. She tends to talk with eccentric phrases that very few understand, most notably exclaiming "Zappy!" when excited. While she is sociable, she tends to prefer one-on-one discussions with her allies and friends, as she states in Fogado's support that she is uncomfortable around crowds.
While she is generally friendly, Yunaka tends to be rather secretive and becomes defensive whenever she feels like someone is trying to pry into her affairs, especially her history. While she goes to great lengths to hide it, on occasion it slips out in conversations, forcing her to slyly cover up what she said. Though trained to be an assassin from a young age, and has admitted to be skilled, she tries to distance herself from this past as she hates this aspect of herself. In battle, she has the hardest time containing her skills and nature as an assassin, with many of her combat lines being more serious and grim. Most notably, her voice pitch drops whenever she is serious.
Yunaka desperately wishes to leave this past behind and hopes to cover it with her sociable aspect. Despite her dark history, she ultimately has a heart of gold and is more like her "projected" personality than she sometimes believes she is. She is the most insightful person in Alear's army, which also lets her be a skilled impressionist and can capture the smallest physical nuances of the person she is imitating.

Yunaka is the quintessential Thief of the game as she is the first one obtained. With solid Speed and Dexterity, she embodies her classes advantages to the fullest with easy Follow-Up Attacks and dodges. Her Strength has a decent growth rate that allows her to sufficiently pile damage if needed. The low Might of Knives can leave her damage to be a bit desired, however simple weapon refines will amend this. She also has a solid starting Resistance to help take hits from Mages and it grows well, especially with her solid HP growths, allowing her to put up a good fight against them. Her only real downside is her low Defense growth, which means that if an enemy can tag her, she can take heavy damage in this regard, though it is often difficult to do so once Yunaka is able to train herself up a bit. Her low Build growth makes it harder for her to wield heavier weapons, though her natural class weapon is hardly hindered by this and her low Magic mostly locks her to physical classes if looking to make her more offensive oriented.
As a Thief, Yunaka thrives in terrain due to being a Covert Unit, as she doubles any Terrain Bonuses she receives. She is exceptionally powerful in terrain that grants her Avoid bonuses such as Forests since not only does she gain double the bonus, her personal skill Trained to Kill grants her bonus +15 to her Critical rate. As such, Yunaka is well suited for maps that have terrain with Avoid bonuses and even if she reclasses out of the Thief class, she still carries this trait.
Yunaka's first map has her equipped with the Ring of the Dawn Maiden, though she is not suited for the ring long term as her low Magic growth does not serve a lot of benefits other than transforming her into a pseudo healer. Still if she can boost her Bond with Micaiah enough, she can get the Weapon Proficiency for Knives at Bond 6. One of her best Emblem Rings overall is the Ring of the Sage Lord as it carries more direct support for Knives such as the Knife Precision that further increases her Hit/Avoid while wielding knives and has multiple tiers to make it stronger. Yunaka is also a strong user of the Ring of the Crux of Fate as its heavy emphasis on debuff and passive supports, can give her a wider range of contribution to fights. Yunaka's default classes Dragon Vein produces a fog terrain, which naturally activates her Personal Skill, allowing Yunaka to easily maintain a threatening, high crit unit on any map. The Ring of the Hero-King provides skills like Perceptive, which boosts her Avoid if she initiates combat and increases it based off her Speed. The Ring of the Lady of the Plains adds skills like Speedtaker, which allows her to boost her Speed every time she defeats a foe, which also allows her to utilize Alacrity as her high Speed growth can keep this skill constantly active so she safely can launch two attacks before her foe could counterattack. The Bracelet of the Shepherd Exalt is also a good option as it further boosts her Speed and Dexterity and comes with skills that synergize with her own: Surprise Attack will nullify counterattacks as long as Yunaka initiates combat from terrain with Avoid bonuses, and the extra Movement it grants while Engaged will allow her to move from one piece of terrain to another with greater ease.
Overall, Yunaka emphasizes the strengths of the Covert Unit style of Engage, making her a formidable unit on terrain heavy maps. Her high Speed and Dexterity further contribute towards this, making her one of, if not the best, dodge tanks in the game with only a weakness to mages and having mediocre damage output at face value. However, due to the relative easy of overcoming the latter, Yunaka proves to be a solid unit in most situations once time has been put into her.
